Medical Careers Academy
Taller San Jose’s Medical Careers Academy prepares youth for employment in the rapidly growing field of clinical medical assisting. Right now, there is a void of trained and reliable medical assistants in Orange County; in fact, California’s Employment Development Department projects that the need for medical assistants in Orange County will grow by more than 35% by 2014.
Taller San Jose is recruiting unemployed young people and preparing them to fill this void by teaching youth how to:
- measure vital signs
- assist physicians with procedures
- prepare and administer medications
- give injections
- draw blood samples
- perform basic laboratory tests
In addition, classes teach EKG & Pulmonary procedures, HIPAA/OSHA regulations, Electronic Health Record training and basic computer skills and certify students in basic life support. Classes focus on improving basic math and English skills and include daily math, focusing on pharmacology basics, math dosage and calculations, as well as intensive English and grammar focusing on medical terminology.
Youth come every day to the Medical Careers Academy dressed in their scrubs and ready to work. At the end of their 16 weeks of basic training, each intern participates in a four-week externship at a local medical clinic.
