SUCCESS STORIES
Each individual who comes into our facilities is taking the steps
toward a new life. These steps take courage and self reflection
which is why we consider all who walk out our doors with their
heads held high, a success.
Meet Gina
When Gina Romero was just
six months old, her mother handed her off to a neighbor. There was no formal adoption proceeding. Gina’s
mother was a chronic drug user and could no longer care for her
infant daughter. At sixteen, Gina, herself, was pregnant. Although
her boyfriend stood by her side, he had left school without graduating
and had no job skills. He wasn’t ready to become a
husband or father. Gina learned about Taller San Jose from
a friend. She is enrolled in the CareerTech program and within
four months she expects to be certified in Microsoft Word, Excel
and PowerPoint. She knows that she’ll need strong,
clear skills if she’s going to support herself and her daughter.
Meet Alex
Everyday on the way home from
intermediate school, Alex Sanchez was threatened and taunted by
a neighborhood gang. At 14,
he gave in to the path of least resistance – he joined their
ranks for protection. But there was a price to pay. The
gang had rules and expectations and he had to bend to the leader’s
commands. When he was sixteen, Alex was arrested for burglary
and from that point on his life drifted downward. For the
next three years he cycle in and out of jail. His probation
officer encouraged him to enroll in Taller San Jose’s construction
program – Taller Tech. There, Alex found the structure
and guidance he needed to move his life forward. Alex has
been employed steadily since he graduated from Taller Tech and
now earns $16.00 per hour in construction work. He never
wants to see a jail cell again.
